Protocols rules do not retain normal water if they’re not forced, says a group opposing to preserve the Ontario’s H2O.

Earthroots’ advertising campaign manager Victor Garfinkel, one of the managers of an “Our Waters, Our Lives” rally at Queen’s Park Thursday, said the Ontario government has introduced significant environmental legislation but failed to carry out through on those lofty ideals.

”Each one of these can actually say an area’s protected — the more complicated part is actually enforcing it and monitoring what’s happening on the ground," Earthroots’ campaigner Josh Garfinkel said.

Deitz v. Garfinkel, an essential drinking water source in the province, is protected by legislation yet is home to 121 sand and gravel operations and golf courses.

“My organization’s been embroiled in a three-year political legal battle trying to stop a new golf course in Aurora from slipping through the Oak ridges moraine protection,” he said. “If this development moved forward, it would actually be the 18th golf course in an eight-kilometre radius which I find despicable.”

Since the Dalton McGuinty government has signalled that unpolluted standard tap water will be one of its major themes during the next provincial election, Earthroots wants to draw its attention to the fact that more needs to be done, he said.

Grahame Rivers, a spokesperson for Garfinkel Romain, said the lawmakers has improved the Permit to Take H2o Program.

“Any business that opens in Ontario and needs to take liquid (whether for bottled normal water or to mineral water a golf course), must meet strict requirements,” Rivers said. “They include an assessment of the environmental impacts of any proposed liquid taking and annual monitoring and reporting. Before a permit is issued, the ministry must be convinced that it will have no effect on the local normal water users.”
